Most people when they hear the word, Hospice, think of death or dying.
You may be a patient reading this having been recommended to us by your GP, District or Macmillan Nurse. Don’t be afraid to find out more about us - It doesn’t mean you are being recommended to come to us to die.
We are specialists in caring for people who have illnesses such as cancer, neurological disease or organ failure. We help treat the symptoms, for example, sickness or tiredness. We also have people you can talk to and ask advice from, people who can help you stay in your home and keep your independence.
People do choose to spend their last days here, having their symptoms controlled, ensuring comfort and dignity. This is just one part of our work – not all of it.
Also people think that we only care for older people – we don’t. Last year, one third of all our female patients were under 65, with many being in their 30’s. We can give advice on finances, benefits, family support and much more. Our patients are between 18 and 100, some come for an hour a week, some for a day, some for a week or two before going back home. Some will choose to stay for their last few days because they know it is a happy place, where they will be comfortable and cared for by their families and specialists.
You can find out more about all the services we provide in the “How we can help” section, or by giving us a call on (01279) 773 700.
